SINGLE REVIEW: Fortune by Slate Label

With powerful vocals and fluid guitar, ‘Fortune’ is Slate Label’s heaviest song yet. Following the

story of a troubled soul through depression; this track has a melancholier undertone, which is certainly juxtaposed by the bands’ forceful performance.

The overarching theme of men's mental health and suicide is perfectly encapsulated in this release, as the band highlights an underrepresented issue in such an important and unavoidable way.

Beginning with tender guitar picking, soft vocals, then building on gentle harmonies. The sidestick technique performed across the snare adds a distinctive and enjoyable layer before hearing the overall, tight drumbeat held throughout the track. The group is then brought in at full force, with Joseph Mestons’ soaring vocals, and James Horwoods’ wailing guitar truly tying it all together.

Where there isn't a catchy chorus per say, the feel throughout the track is enough to excite an audience and likely become a playlist staple for fans and non-alike.

The pertinent lyrics; such as ‘Failed by those who knew his soul’ and ‘the boy’s misunderstood’, reiterate the fundamental theme of the song, and the awareness due to be raised.

‘Fortune’ continues a series of singles released by Slate Label, including ‘In It for the Ride’ and ‘Bitter End', and is set to be released on March 27.
